I Finally Watched the Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life

I have to let you in on something. I have never watched The Gilmore Girls. Like Never. Ihave heard about the show, I have seen it advertised, I have friends who rave about the show, but I have never watched a single episode.

The show began in 2000 and I was working full time, very long hours and was hardly ever home. I had just started my Master's program, so I literally had any time for television, plus, I didn't even have cable in my little condo that I owned. And I had just got engaged to be married, so I was on my own personal happy cloud!

Gilmore Girls

The year, 2001, I got married, built a new home with my new husband and had a baby. All while working full-time, again, very long hours. In 2002, I was busy decorating my new home and taking care of my new baby and I got pregnant again. In 2003, I had another baby and my hands and heart were super full. I don't think I watched television at all that year!

2004 was filled with moving our life to China and in 2005, we lived in China without any television at all, except what we could get boot legged into our apartment in Beijing. Reception was so spotty and that was the year I first saw American Idol, because that was the only television show that never blanked out -- Chinese people love American Idol!

We returned to the USA in 2006, but I was pregnant and had two little ones running around. In 2007, I had another little baby to take care of and television was something I dreamed of watching! I think the only show I ever recall watching was One Tree Hill.

By this time, in 2008, I began to hear about The Gilmore Girls, but it had already ended. But, we didn't have a TiVO or a DVR because they were so expensive back then. {I can't believe I just typed that expression!} I was still manually setting up shows to record and rewatching episodes as I had time. I didn't want to begin watching a television series that had began so many years before, so I just never watched any episodes.

I have this issue with television shows; if I miss the beginning, I don't want to see them and try to figure out what is going on. I do the same thing with movies. If I miss the beginning, I'm not even going to bother watching it. That was how I felt about The Gilmore Girls. I was not going to try to catch up here and there and try to figure out who was who and what was what. So, I just never watched the show.

The day the DVR entered my home, my love for television really blossomed! But, the day Netflix entered my home -- oh baby -- a whole new world of television opened up to me! I missed so many great shows! I literally filled every cell within my brain with the years of television shows all my friends had been watching.

Gilmore Girls

So here I am at the end of year 2016 and I still had not watched The Gilmore Girls. Netflix was all set to air Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life Thanksgiving weekend, so I knew I had to finally get my streaming self in with the rest of society.

After nearly a two decades of having no clue what everyone was talking about, I decided to watch The Gilmore Girls with my daughters. The Gilmore Girls were officially back. I certainly had a lot of catching up to do. So I settled myself in my comfy chair and began the show. I was not prepared for the fast-talking fun with Lorelai, Rory and Emily Gilmore.

I loved following along in the storybook Connecticut town that was populated with a mix of everyday people. Gilmore Girls is funny, its about friendship, family and everything that keeps them together. Lorelai and Rory grow up together in The Gilmore Girls and I'm so happy I finally starting streaming this show!

The Netflix series reboot, Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life is set nearly a decade after the finale of the original series, and this revival follows Lorelai, Rory and Emily Gilmore through four seasons of change. Each episode depicted a different season in one year.  Episode 1: “Winter”, Episode 2: “Spring”, Episode 3: “Summer” and Episode 4: “Fall”.

Can't wait for the final four words! Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premiered Nov. 25 on Netflix.

What have you been sharing this Holiday weekend?
