10 Series You Should be Streaming on Netflix This summer
Lupin
The word 'Lupin' might make you think of a million anime movies, and this French series literally uses the thief character Arsène Lupin as a point of inspiration for its protagonist. Omar Sy plays Assane Diop, the son of a Senegalese immigrant who was wrongly imprisoned for theft, at the behest of his powerful employer. Decades after his father commits suicide, Assane plots revenge on the employer's family, using 'gentleman thief' skills inspired by the Lupin character. The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier is behind this watchable series – with only five episodes available right now, it won't take you long to get through it.
Money Heist
Don't let the strangely goofy name put you off. Money Heist, or La Casa del Papel as it's known in Spanish-speaking countries, is a thrilling heist drama about a group of criminals brought together by an enigmatic figure called The Professor to rob the Royal Mint of Spain. With dense characterization, big twists and career-making performances, this is an unusual and clever heist show that'll grip you right away.
While it's been a huge hit with a Spanish-speaking audience for the longest time, Money Heist has now found a big audience in the English-speaking world, too. A new set of episodes just dropped on Netflix, meaning you've got 31 episodes to watch if you've never seen it before, divided over two separate overarching stories about the same set of characters.
Whatever you do, make sure you switch the default dub off and listen to the original Spanish audio with subtitles. This series could be the best Netflix show you've not seen yet – a final season of two parts is releasing on September 3 and December 3 respectively.
Schitt’s Creek
Schitt’s Creek is HIL-AR-IOUS! And one of my all-time favorite series ever. My husband actually watched this series with me (which means, I couldn't stream it at night and had to wait for him to plow through 5 season) This Canadian series is the story of a wealthy family that loses all their money and they only own a tiny, backwoods town, Schitt’s Creek, that they are forced move to and live out of a motel. The episodes show how the family slowly begins their new lives in their new town, all quirks included. IT IS DELIGHTFUL!
Shadow and Bone
Shadow and Bone take place in a fantasy world that is populated mostly by humans but also has magic-folk known as Grisha. Grisha is a somewhat ostracized group, so when a girl mapmaker turns out to be Grisha and also the Sun Summoner, the fantasy world is upended. Season Two coming SOON.
Stranger Things
I’m not really sure who HASN’T streamed Stranger Things, BUT, if you ahven’t - Get To It!! Stranger Things is an 80s-set mystery thriller that has it all, a creepy atmosphere, compelling characters, and a strong narrative storyline. There is a government mystery, impressive special effects, and most of all, the memorable characters that are teens.
When is The Next Season COMING!!?
Line of Duty
Line of Duty is one of my husband and I’s favorite series!! This police drama follows the work of AC-12, a police anti-corruption unit working in an unspecified UK city. Originally broadcast on the BBC, the show centers around Steven Arnott, a detective who is transferred to AC-12 from counter-terrorism after a delicate operation goes badly wrong, and colleagues Kate Fleming – an undercover operative – and Ted Hastings. Each set of six episodes covers a different case of potential police wrongdoing, and there are moments of gripping tension that make it perfect for binge-watching. Season five is on Netflix, with the first four on BBC iPlayer and the sixth airing through spring 2021.
Cobra Kai
Once a YouTube original, Netflix recently snapped up the rights to Karate Kid continuation TV show Cobra Kai. Set 34 years after Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) was defeated by Danny LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), the former opens the Cobra Kai dojo once more to teach a new generation of kids how to fight. This sparks Johnny and Danny's old rivalry, with Danny being the show's villain this time, a clever flip of the original film's premise.
If you love Karate Kid, this show is a lot of fun, and both its leads are in surprisingly great condition considering they're each performing fight stunts in their fifties. Season 3 is now on Netflix, and Cobra Kai season 4 is coming this year, too.
The Haunting of Hill House/ The Haunting of Bly Manor
The Haunting of Hill House is a seminal ghost story and the series focuses on the haunted lives of the withering Crain family. Scenes are present and past of the Crain's spent in the haunted mansion and the years of grief and family trauma they endured in the aftermath. The follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House is a new story with new characters and a new setting.
The Crown
The Crown is amazing! I loved Season 1 and had a bit of trouble getting into season 2 because I adored Season 1’s queen so much. But, after I gave it, Season 2 &3 were just as amazing. Then season 4 was explosive!! Whether you like the royal family or not, The Crown is simply GOOD! Two more seasons are planned, too, with The Crown season 5 expected in 2022.
The Umbrella Academy
The Netflix original series The Umbrella Academy is the perfect antidote for the summer series! The entire series revolves around seven children with extraordinary powers who were adopted by a strange, weird man who trains them all to be heroes. However, they all seem to end up apart as adults and are trying to unite to save the world.
The Umbrella Academy season 3 is now in the works.
BONUS:
Travellers
Travellers is something of a hidden gem, albeit one that's increasingly not hidden as people realize the genius of this tight, entertaining Canadian sci-fi series. Run by Brad Wright, one of the co-creators of Stargate SG-1, the show follows a team of time travellers sent back to "the 21st" to prevent the post-apocalyptic future from which they came. The twist is how they travel. The Travellers have their consciousness transferred into the bodies of people shortly before their death, adopting their identities and living their lives between missions. It's an often thrilling, sometimes complicated watch that treads the line between serious sci-fi and accessible entertainment perfectly.
