My first introduction to glühwein was in Germany. My husband and I spent time in Germany traveling to quite a few German Christkindle markets prior to having children. I personally do not care for glühwein, but my husband and his family love and adore this spiced red wine.
My mother in law gifts my husband a couple of bottles of glühwein every year for Chrstmas and I have to say, he will drink it, but it’s not good. It’s cheap glühwein and even though it’s warm and spiced . . . cheap is cheap. This year I had to create a red wine gift basket with a mulled red wine recipe for him!
Mulled Red Wine Gift Jar
This year I decided to make a Mulled Red Wine Gift Jar / red wine gift basket so everyone could enjoy some really good glühwein instead of the cheap glühwein that is gifted every year. If you enjoy the cheaper glühwein, then by all means, enjoy. But I love this Mulled Red Wine Gift Jar / red wine gift basket with a mulled red wine recipe so much more. My husband wholeheartedly agrees.
If you are thinking this would take too much time, it does not. This Mulled Red Wine Gift Jar / red wine gift basket is one of the easiest DIY Holiday Food Gift to put together. Do you have a drink dispenser in your house? I have four! I love drink dispensers so much, especially at parties and gatherings! I see them everywhere, so you can easily purchase one at either Home Goods, TJMax, Marshalls, or even Walmart. Grab a pretty drink dispenser and then head to the grocer for all the other ingredients. The essential ingredients are good wine, some citris fruits and some spices.
The actual mulled wine recipe is super simple to put together as well. It really only takes about 15-20 minutes of prep and a slow simmer on the stovetop. You could even put everything in a crockpot and that is all that will need to be done. The aspect I love the most about making spiced wine at home is that your home will smell delicious!
Glühwein, or spiced wine or mulled wine or glögg, is a red wine (or white wine if you prefer) that is spiced with some herbs and heated and enjoyed by many during the holiday months. This Mulled Red Wine Gift Jar / red wine gift basket makes for a great hostess gift, a gift to family members, co-workers or even a makes a special house warming gift.

This Mulled Red Wine Gift Jar / red wine gift basket is super easy to pull togther, even if you don’t have a glass dispenser jar, you could put it all in a gift basket too. It is easily customized if someone doesn’t like specific spices. The spiced mulled wine can also be jazzed up a bit with some flavored liqueurs.
Alternate Ingredient Ideas for Mulled Wine
The wine: I happen to think a Chianti makes the BEST Spiced Mulled Red Wine, but I know a lot of people will pick up any cheap bottle of red wine. But my advise is this . . . good is good and better is just better. By a nice bottle of wine. The gift looks nicer and your mulled wine will taste all that much better.
Some ideas for spices: include peppercorns, fennel seeds, rosemary, cardamom, cinnamon, all spice, vanilla, cloves, star anise and nutmeg.
Some alternate ideas for a sweetener: are honey, molasses, sugar, maple syrup, simple syrup or a flavored simple syrup.
Additional liquor options: could include limoncello, vermouth, brandy or cognac.
Some citrus is always needed and the best options: are always clementines, oranges, lemons and limes; but you could also add dried fruits such as cranberries or apricots or even fresh cranberries or pomegranates.
Simply add a good bottle of wine, the spices, the sweetener, and the citrus into the glass drink dispenser or basket. Add either a lovely tea towel or wooden spoon and that is it for a great DIY Holiday Food Gift. I also add in a Christkindle cup because we have so many of them and they make great gifts.
MULLED RED WINE RECIPE
2 clementines
1 lemon
1 lime
6 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 whole nutmeg, for grating (about 10-15 grates)

2 star anise
1 bottle Chianti
OPTIONAL: 1 tablespoon of brandy, 2 tablespoons of orange cognac, 1/2 cup dried cranberries
OTIONAL GARNISHES: citrus slices, cinnamon sticks
1. Use a peeler to peel large sections of peel from the clementines, lemon and lime and put the pieces of peel in the pot and squeeze in the clementine juice.
2. Put the spices and about 10 to 15 gratings of nutmeg in a pot over a medium heat. Add the honey and coat everything an dheat through.
3. Add the bottle of Chianti. Let this simmer until the honey has completely dissolved into the red wine, then heat through for about 5 minutes until the wine is warm. DO NOT BOIL THE WINE. Ladle it into heatproof glasses and serve.
And since everything looks better with a bow on it, tie a pretty bow around the jar and your DIY Holiday Food Gift for family and friends who enjoy spiced red wine with this Mulled Red Wine Gift Jar / red wine gift basket is complete.
