DIY Succulent Container Garden / Resurrection Garden

At the beginning of Holy Week, last Sunday, Palm Sunday . . . I told my daughters I thought we should create a Resurrection Garden / Succulent Container Garden. They had no idea what I was talking about, so I briefly explained. (Basically, we were making a Succulent Container Garden in a pot.) We headed off to a nursery for some planter, plants and high hopes that we could figure something out.

On Palm Sunday we filled the pot with dirt and planted our lavender herb plant in the center and our succulents surrounding the outer ring. We placed a tomb in our planter pot and made a path of rocks to the tomb. On Good Friday, we will put up three crosses made from twigs and place a flat stone in front of our tomb. On Easter Sunday morning, we will roll away the stone from our tomb and celebrate Christ's victory over death!

  • Small White Rocks
  • Various Succulents or Fresh Herbs (enough to fill your pot)

  • White Paint
  • Small Twigs (from our backyard)
  • String
  • Small Flat Stone (from our backyard)

10. Place a lamb toy behind the tiny pot.

This Resurrection Garden does not have to be a Resurrection Garden if you celebrate spring differently. This simply could be a lovely Succulent Garden. Succulents are a very easy plant to grow. We happen to love the exotic look of succulents in our little mini pots. We have been growing succulents for years now and some of ours look so awesome now. Succulents really are the way to go because they are drought tolerant and easy to maintain.

Planting a succulent garden is fun because there are so many colors and shapes to play with.

Caring for Your Succulents

Caring for your Resurrection Garden / Succulent Container Garden is simple. Simple put, do not over-water. Keep the soil moist, not wet. It is best to let the soil completely dry out between watering. During the winter months, if you live in the midwest like we do especially, water less frequently. Keep the soil on the dry side during the winter months as succulents are usually 'sleeping' (dormant).
