It is still a brisk 40 degrees here in Chicago, but the sun has been shining brightly. Bright enough to make my house lighter and the dirt brighter. The dirt and salt from the winter appear more visible now. Believe me, living in the midwest during a harsh winter is no joke. Everything get dragged in on boots, snow pants, heavy coats and hats and gloves. I clean my house weekly, but the salt gets into every little crack.
I am fully welcoming the burst of spring weather this week by giving my home a really good deep clean. These early Spring days create the perfect opportunity to tackle some deep cleaning tasks. I can open the windows and let the cool brisk air inside and let all the germs outside. An added bonus is while I am busy cleaning and my house is getting some cool fresh air, I don’t sweat to death. ☺

Here are my do’s and don’t to show you the best way to brighten and refresh every room in your home. From deep cleaning carpets, polishing wood furniture and washing windows I have a few tips that would make Mary Poppins smile in pure joy. I will say in all honesty, there are some tasks I simply do not handle and I hire out. We have 50 windows in our home and I am not cleaning them. It’s just too much, so I do hire out for the task of window cleaning. I do not deep clean my carpet or furniture as I hire this task out as well. I have hard wood floors on my entire first floor and only have carpeting upstairs, so it’s an easy day to schedule a service.

Spring days really are the perfect time to complete some really deep cleaning tasks in your home. Winter is over, the sun is shining and it is quite simple to add in a few deep cleaning tasks to a normal cleaning schedule. The extra spring related cleaning tasks simply add a bit of time to the normal cleaning routine.

Everyone really just wants to enjoy making the little things in life fun, am I right? Because as Mary Poppins says, “Everything is Possible, Even the Impossible”! Why not take the Mary Poppins aproach to cleaning? Mary Poppins was infamous for turning any experience, no matter how boring, into an adventure. Here is my favorite tip: A great way to promote fun in any cleaning tasks is to make everything smell amazing.
Simply grab an empty spray bottle and a few ingredients. We used lavender, orange and lemon essential oils for their wonderful scents. Lavender Essenstial Oil is calming and a mood booster and it improves cognitive abilities (great for kiddos). Besides Orange Essential Oil’s amazing smell, it creates a happy, relaxed feeling and it is also a wonderful mood lifter. Lemon Essential Oil is another mood booster and also great for fighting bacteria, so any leftover viruses hanging about will be knocked out. Lemon makes a fabulous household cleaner and laundry freshener.
Really, just select any scents that are great for peace and calm. Switch up the scent blend or simply use your favorite essential oil. Coconut and vanilla smell wonderful together. For added fun, let your kiddos select the scent they would like to use in the room they clean. Each room could have a different designated scent.
Here is another tip for using essential oils in cleaning: Add in a few drop of peppermint for added sanitization benefits. Use the spray to sanitize your countertops, tiles, floors, sinks, showers and bathtubs. Essential oils are considered to be much safer for cleaning than chemical cleaners. And I will say this again, they smell amazing!!
NEEDED:
Essential oils
Empty spray bottles
INSTRUCTIONS:
Place 10 drops of essential oil in an empty spray bottle
Fill the bottle half full with room temperature water
Swirl to combine all ingredients
This spray is perfect for lightly spraying curtains, bedding, cushions, chairs and sofas. If you happen to be mopping tiles, simply add a few drops of a favorite essential oil scent to the cleaning water. We simply use vinegar and hot water to clean our wood floors, but we always add an essential oil. I usually use Eucalyptus Essential Oil because it is great for killing germs, relieving coughs and fantastic for sinus issues. Plus, for some reason, eucalyptus is one of my favorite scents!
INGREDIENTS::
¼ cup of apple cider vinegar
15 drops of peppermint essential oil
15 drops of lemon essential oil
Water
INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix vinegar and essential oil in a spray bottle
Fill the rest of the bottle with room temperature water
Swirl to combine all ingredients
This second spray bottle mixture is great for sanitizing your countertops, tiles, floors, sinks and bathrooms. Just remember to store these out of reach of children and wear rubber gloves whilst spraying and spritzing about.
