PILGRIM UNIT STUDY

November is here and it is the time to begin a homeschool unit study about the Pilgrims, the Mayflower, and how Thanksgiving came to be. Keep your children engaged and motivated this Thanksgiving holiday with these TWO FREE Pilgrim Unit Study.

During this season of Thanksgiving, use the provided informational text and research on the Pilgrims and their voyage on the Mayflower and eventual Plymouth Colony. In addition, learn about why the Pilgrims left England and also about the amazing Wampanoag Native American Indian tribe through the integration of these interactive and fun social studies worksheets.

The materials in this unit are interactive and utilize multimodal strategies to increase student engagement and outcomes. The Pilgrim Unit Study is a comprehensive week-long unit study that integrates technology, vocabulary, writing, art, reading strategies, and more! ANOTHER FREE DOWNLOAD for this Pilgrims UNIT STUDY is a Pilgrims Shape Book that you can print out and have your young children cut out, color in, answer questions.

This is a great little booklet for the younger grade levels.
Print out THE PILGRIMS Shape Book to make a short book about the Pilgrims. Cut out each circle. Connect the pages together, then color the pages. You can map the Pilgrims' voyage, read about the help provided by the Wampanoag, learn about the first Thanksgiving, and answer the Pilgrim’s questions.

Printing the cover on colored construction paper looks great and adds durability.

Skills practiced: Cutting, coloring, writing, reading, answering questions, reading maps.

1) Read and discuss the Mayflower Compact. Discuss the laws created, why they were created, and perhaps make a few of your own.

2) Be sure to watch the Mayflower Videos on History.com as a family.

3) Select books for teaching thus PILGRIM UNIT STUDY. The hardest part is selecting the books because there are so many awesome books available today about the Native Americans, The Pilgrims, and The First Thanksgiving. It is best to select books that fit with your family and the appropriate reading levels of your children. Use books to read aloud during the unit study and also assign books for your children to read according to their abilities.

Thanksgiving on Plymouth Plantation by Diane Stanley. Join the Time-Traveling Twins as they sit down to an enormous THREE-DAY feast, complete with puddings, pompions, pottages, and, of course, turkeys. Meet Squanto and the other Native Americans. Help with the harvest. Find out what it was really like to be a Pilgrim.

The Pilgrims at Plymouth by Lucille Recht Penner. Life on the Mayflower was harsh. When the Pilgrims reached America, things got even worse. More than half the Pilgrims died the first winter. Luckily, the Pilgrims made friends with the Indians who lived nearby. Thanks to the Indians, the Pilgrims set up the first successful American colony at Plymouth, Massachusetts.
